Chemical service punishes coatings on three axes at once — concentration, temperature, and immersion duration — and a coating that survives one rarely survives all three. Belzona's 4000-series chemical-resistant coatings (the Magma CR family) are specified to a product number against the actual chemistry list, not against a generic acid-resistance claim.
Plant chemists don't ask 'is this coating chemical resistant.' They ask whether it survives 98% H₂SO₄ in continuous immersion, 50% NaOH at 80°C, or hydrocarbon-acid mixed service with pH cycling. Belzona's selection chart is built around exactly that question.
For continuous immersion in concentrated inorganic acids, Belzona 4311 (Magma CR1) is rated to 98% sulfuric acid at ambient; the matching repair composite Belzona 4301 (Magma CR1 Hi-Build) rebuilds metal loss in the same chemistry. For mixed acid service with USDA incidental food-contact constraints, 4341 (Magma CR4) and 4331 (Magma CR3) carry the regulatory approvals. For chemically-attacked concrete bunds, 4141 and 4131 rebuild vertical and overhead surfaces with no formwork.
A closer look at Chemical Industry
Where Belzona systems get specified — open any area to dig in.
01Concrete bunds and secondary containment
Most plant bund failures are concrete failures, not coating failures. Acid washdown attacks the cement matrix, freeze-thaw cycles open hairline cracks, and the original coating disbonds because the substrate underneath has lost integrity. The Belzona repair sequence is to rebuild the concrete with the 4100-series (4141 for vertical surfaces, 4131 for overhead, no formwork required) and then coat with the appropriate Magma CR-grade for the chemistry on site.
02Process vessel internal linings
For metal vessels in concentrated acid service at ambient temperature, Belzona 4311 (Magma CR1) is the workhorse coating; the repair-grade Belzona 4301 (Magma CR1 Hi-Build) rebuilds metal loss in the same chemistry, so substrate prep, rebuild, and topcoat all stay in one product family. For vessels in higher-temperature service or in mixed reagent streams, Belzona 1392 (Ceramic HT2) and Belzona 1593 take over above roughly 80°C.
03Pump bases, sumps, sluices, drains
The hardest chemical-service substrates to coat are not the obvious ones — they're the small horizontal areas around vertical pumps, sluices, and drain channels where standing acid concentrates over time. Belzona 4341 (Magma CR4) and 4351 (Magma CR5) handle this duty; the repair sequence routinely involves cutting back the contaminated concrete first, rebuilding with 4111 Magma-Quartz, then top-coating.
04Live leak repair on acid pits and bund walls
Live acid leaks are bonded with composite wrap systems from the chemical-resistant family — the same wrap chemistry used on chemical pipework, applied to the leak source under flow. The repair holds long enough to schedule the proper isolation and full repair without an emergency shutdown of upstream production.
05Joints, expansion joints, and bund corners under chemical attack
Rigid coatings crack at expansion joints under thermal cycling and at bund corner fillets under structural movement. Belzona 4361 is the flexible Magma CR-grade specified for this duty — chemical-resistant chemistry with enough elongation to accommodate movement. Joints are the failure point reviewers most often miss; specifying the rigid CR-grade across the joint instead of the flexible variant is a guaranteed re-work in 18 months.
06What to verify per product before specifying
Every chemical-resistance rating in the 4000 series is published in the Belzona PSS against a specific reagent at a specific temperature and concentration. Don't extrapolate. If the on-site chemistry isn't in the published PSS list, request a chemistry compatibility check from Belzona before specification. The cost of getting this wrong is a coated bund that fails between turnarounds.
