Water and wastewater specifications turn on regulatory approval first and material performance second. Belzona carries NSF/ANSI 61 certification on the 5811DW2, 5812DW, 5892, and 1341 product codes — the gating qualification for potable water contact. The non-potable side (clarifiers, lift stations, sludge handling) uses the broader immersion-grade family applied in service.
Engineers at municipal water and wastewater authorities specify the approval first and the application second. NSF/ANSI 61 is non-negotiable on potable water; on the wastewater side, the question is whether the coating can be applied while the lift station, clarifier, or sludge line is still operating.
On the potable side, Belzona 5811DW2 (immersion-grade), 5812DW, 5892 (hot potable water), and 1341 (Supermetalglide) carry NSF/ANSI 61 approval. On the wastewater side, Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) coats clarifier internals, weir surfaces, lift station walls, and headworks steel — applied without taking the asset offline. Live leaks on sludge piping and force mains are bonded with composite wraps that hold under flow long enough to schedule the proper isolation.

01Potable water tanks, lines, and treatment plant assets
For potable water service, the gating fact is NSF/ANSI 61 certification per product code. Belzona 5811DW2 is the workhorse immersion-grade coating for potable water tanks and treatment-side equipment. Belzona 5812DW handles cold drinking water service. Belzona 5892 is the hot potable water variant. Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide) carries the same NSF/ANSI 61 approval and is the specified coating where the duty calls for an erosion-resistant flow surface — circulating pump volutes, valve bodies, and metering chamber walls. Specifications written against generic 'NSF-approved Belzona' claims should be rejected; the certification attaches to the product code, not the brand.
02Clarifiers, weirs, and settlement basin internals
Clarifier skirts, scraper arms, weir surfaces, and the structural steel inside the basin corrode from the combination of standing water, biological activity, and seasonal chemistry shifts. Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) coats the internal surfaces; the surface-tolerant variant 5831 (ST-Barrier) handles the sections where complete dry-out isn't operationally feasible. Aluminum panels — common on older clarifier skirts — are coated with the same family with appropriate primer.
03Lift stations, headworks, and screening structures
Lift stations face the worst chemistry profile in the wastewater train: H₂S corrosion above the waterline, biological attack below, and freeze-thaw at the splash line. The 5000-series immersion-grade and surface-tolerant coatings handle the wet-side; the 4000-series chemical-resistant family (4311, 4331) is specified for the headspace and high-chemistry exposure zones above the waterline.
04Sludge piping, force mains, and live leak repair
Live leak repair on operating sludge piping is one of the highest-value Belzona applications in this sector — a single leak repaired in service, without isolating a half-mile force main, recovers its specification cost on the avoided shutdown alone. The repair uses composite wrap systems applied under flow; the bond holds long enough to schedule the proper isolation and a permanent repair without an emergency response. The KHIA case Live Leak Repair to 8" Sludge Pit Discharge Pipe with Belzona documents the procedure on an operating system.
05Pump volutes, impellers, and valve bodies
Erosion-corrosion on circulating pumps and valve bodies in raw water and wastewater service is rebuilt with the 1000-series composites (1111 Super Metal, 1311 Ceramic R-Metal) and topcoated with 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) for the smooth, erosion-resistant flow surface. On potable side, the same rebuild logic applies but the topcoat must be NSF/ANSI 61 approved (1341 Supermetalglide).
06Concrete bunds, secondary containment, and chemical handling
Plant-side chemical handling — sodium hypochlorite, sulfuric acid, ferric chloride, polymer feed — needs the chemical-resistant 4000-series family. Concrete bunds are rebuilt with 4111 / 4131 / 4141 and top-coated with the appropriate Magma CR-grade for the on-site chemistry list, identical to the chemical-industry repair sequence.
