Cement plant maintenance is dominated by abrasive wear at scales that punish conventional repair — kiln support rollers under continuous load, ball mill shells where wear plates have shifted, silos cracking from material expansion. Belzona's repair stack centers on cold plate bonding, abrasion-resistant epoxies, and heavy-build concrete repair composites — applied without welding or formwork.
The cement maintenance question isn't whether a polymer can rebuild a worn shell — it's whether the rebuild holds under the next 10,000 tons of clinker, the next thermal cycle, and the next year of bulk-solids throughput. Belzona's specifications are built around that endurance profile.
Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) rebuilds ball mill internal shell under shifted wear plates. Belzona 1818 is the abrasion-resistant epoxy for chutes, hoppers, screw conveyors, and silo internals seeing clinker and ash throughput. Belzona 4111 (Magma-Quartz) provides cold plate bonding for silo reinforcement and wear plate re-securement — under impact loading without welding. Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) and 1121 handle kiln support roller shafts and trunnion bearing housings.

01Ball mills — shell rebuild and wear plate securement
Ball mill internals see constant impact from grinding media and direct abrasion from raw mix throughput. When wear plates shift or partially detach, the shell wall behind them takes accelerated wear and can develop through-wall holes. The Belzona repair sequence is to rebuild the damaged shell area with Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal), then re-secure the wear plates with Belzona 4111 (Magma-Quartz) cold plate bonding for the next operating cycle. The KHIA cases Belzona 4111 Repairs Shell and Secures Wedge Liners in a Ball Mill and Belzona Repairs Ball Mill Shell document the procedure on operating mills. Belzona 1818 is also specified into ball mill internals where the duty profile leans more toward continuous abrasion than impact rebuild.
02Kiln support rollers, trunnions, and bearing housings
Kiln support roller shafts wear at the lip seal area, allowing oil to leak past and the bearing to run dry. Conventional repair means pulling the kiln to a shop — a multi-week scope. Belzona 1111 (Super Metal) rebuilds the seal area in situ; the matching 1131 (Bearing Metal) handles the bearing housing internal surface. Trunnion bearing repair on heavy mill assets follows the same sequence; the KHIA case Belzona Trunnion Bearing Housing Repair Saves Money walks through a steel mill case that translates directly to cement-plant kiln support equipment.
03Silos — plate bonding for structural reinforcement
Cement and clinker silos crack at construction joints under cyclic loading from material flow and freeze-thaw on the external surface. Conventional reinforcement means welding plate sections to the silo wall — a hot-work scope on a structure full of combustible dust. Belzona 4111 (Magma-Quartz) cold plate bonding installs reinforcement plates with no hot work permit and no fire watch; the bond strength is sufficient to handle the cyclic load envelope. The KHIA case Belzona Cold Plate Bonding Repairs and Reinforces Silos documents the structural-reinforcement application.
04Hoppers, chutes, screw conveyors, and bulk-solids handling
The defining failure mode in bulk-solids handling at a cement plant is abrasive wear at high impact angles on hopper internal walls, chute liners, and screw conveyor flights. Belzona 1818 is the trowel-grade abrasion-resistant epoxy specified into this duty — applied as severe-wear rebuild and optionally topcoated. Re-lining intervals are scheduled into kiln turnarounds, with no welding required. The product family carries across to ash handling at coal-fired power plants and slag handling at steel mills; the wear profile is similar enough that a cement-plant maintenance team and a power-plant team often pull from the same shelf.
05Preheater tower, calciner, and high-temperature cement assets
The hot-side cement assets — preheater cyclones, calciner internals, kiln inlet — combine high temperature with abrasive raw mix attack. The 1000-series ceramic coatings (1391T, 1593) take over from the 4000 series above roughly 80°C continuous immersion or surface temperature. Where the substrate has lost measurable material, the high-temperature metal repair Belzona 1511 rebuilds before the topcoat goes on.
