Power generation and hydropower share a cooling-water-and-rotating-equipment asset stack regardless of fuel source — turbine runners, wicket gates, condenser tube sheets, water boxes, cooling tower internals, and circulating pumps. Belzona's specification on this stack is built around two failure modes: cavitation implosion on flow-handling surfaces, and erosion-corrosion on cooling-water assets.

What drives the decision

This page covers thermal generation, nuclear, and hydropower together because the asset stack is the same — turbines, condensers, cooling water systems, circulating pumps. The product specification varies by failure mode, not by fuel.

Choosing the system

For cavitation damage on turbine runners, wicket gates, and pump impellers — implosion damage, not erosion damage — Belzona 2141 (ACR Fluid Elastomer) absorbs the implosion energy that destroys rigid coatings. For condenser tube sheets, water boxes, and end covers, the 1000-series metal repair composites (1111, 1121, 1311) rebuild measured loss. For internal corrosion in cooling tower internals and circulating water systems, Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) is the standard internal coating.

Where Belzona systems get specified — open any area to dig in.

01Hydropower turbine runners, wicket gates, and draft tubes

The cavitation-resistance specification on a Francis or Kaplan runner is unusually demanding because the implosion energy at low-pressure points is constant under continuous operation. Belzona 2141 (ACR Fluid Elastomer) is engineered for exactly this duty — the elastomer absorbs the implosion energy where rigid ceramic coatings would spall. Where the cavitation has already removed measurable material, the loss is rebuilt with Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) before the elastomer goes on. The repair is done in situ with the runner pulled into the powerhouse, not at an OEM shop, which preserves the schedule.

02Thermal and nuclear plant condensers — tube sheets, water boxes, end covers

Galvanic corrosion at carbon-steel-to-stainless-tube joints is the dominant failure mode on power-plant condenser tube sheets, and the alternative to in-situ repair is replacement of the tube sheet — a high-cost, long-lead-time outage scope item. The Belzona repair sequence is to rebuild with the 1000-series composites (1111 Super Metal, 1121 Super XL-Metal, 1311 Ceramic R-Metal), then top-coat with the ceramic-filled 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) for the erosion-resistant face. The KHIA case Impeller at Nuclear Plant Repaired and Protected with Belzona walks through the procedure on a circulating pump impeller; the same logic applies to the tube sheet face.

03Cooling tower internals, fan blades, and structural steel

Cooling tower water-handling assets corrode from the inside under continuous wet service. Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) coats the internal surfaces and arrests the corrosion. Cooling tower fan blades that have lost their leading-edge profile are rebuilt with the 1000-series composites and finished with Belzona 1341 (Supermetalglide) — the same erosion-resistance face used on similar bow-thruster and fan-blade applications elsewhere. The KHIA cases Cooling Tower Fan Blades Repaired with Belzona and Cooling Tower Refurbished with Belzona document the typical repair envelope.

04Circulating water pumps and service-water systems

Circulating water pumps in power generation are the highest-rotation, highest-volume asset class on the cold side. Belzona 1311 rebuilds pump casings and impellers; 1391T provides high-temperature chemical resistance on hotter service-water lines. For erosion-corrosion on pump volutes, the 1321 ceramic-filled topcoat restores the smooth flow surface. Belzona 1111 handles the bulk metal-loss rebuild on heavier casings.

05Hydropower-specific concrete and structural assets

Hydropower stations have asset categories absent from thermal generation — concrete intake structures, draft tube concrete, spillway erosion, and trash rack fouling. The 4000-series chemical-resistant family handles the concrete-side chemistry; 4111 (Magma-Quartz) and the heavy-build 4141 / 4131 rebuild concrete back to profile in vertical and overhead applications without formwork. Anti-slip surfacing on penstock and gallery walkways uses 4411 (Granogrip).
