Separators

Separator vessels see a difficult combination at every internal surface: hydrocarbon, water, sand, and dissolved gas in continuous contact. Erosion-corrosion at the inlet, sand-scour on the bottom head, and chemical pitting in produced-water service are the dominant findings. Belzona's immersion-grade and chemical-resistant systems are graded to the service.

Separators — Belzona application

Our approach

Cold-applied, in place

Repairs and protective coatings applied on-site with no hot work and, in most cases, no shutdown.

Supplied + applied

We supply the Belzona system and our in-house crews apply it — or supply only. Your call.

24-hour support

Emergency response across Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, and Lake Charles.

What tends to go wrong
  • Inlet erosion from sand-laden multiphase flow at the inlet nozzle and distributor.
  • Bottom-head pitting in the water-and-sand collection zone.
  • Internal weld-seam corrosion in produced-water and amine service.
  • Coalescer-pack support corrosion at the internals attachment points.
  • Manway-flange and outlet-nozzle face damage.
  • External shell corrosion under insulation and at saddle supports.
How Belzona helps

Why separators wear unevenly

Separator vessels do not corrode uniformly. The inlet nozzle and distribution box see sand-erosion. The water-leg and bottom head see chloride pitting. The vapor space sees dew-point corrosion. The repair scope has to be split by zone.

Inlet and distributor erosion-corrosion

Inlet nozzles, distribution boxes, and the impingement plate immediately downstream are rebuilt with Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) for the metal-loss buildup and topcoated with Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) or Belzona 1391T for higher-temperature immersion.

Water-leg and bottom-head lining

Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade) is the baseline immersion lining for produced-water and oil-water service at moderate temperature. Belzona 5811DW2 is the WRAS-listed variant where potable contact is part of the duty. For elevated-temperature produced-water and amine service, the 4000-series chemical-resistant linings (4311, 4341) are selected against the actual service chemistry.

Internals and pack-support repair

Coalescer-pack support frames, demister-mat retainers, and weir-plate supports are rebuilt with Belzona 1111 / 1311 against the original geometry and reinstalled. The reformed surface accepts the same internals on reassembly without custom fit-up.

Inspection-driven scope

Separator scope is built off the API-510 inspection record: where the inspector finds wall-thickness loss, the rebuild restores design profile; where the inspector flags coating breakdown, the lining is removed and replaced. Belzona Baton Rouge documents the rebuild against the asset record so the next inspector reads the actual film stack on each internal zone.

Field application

Confined-space scrubber and separator entries are heat- and ventilation-limited. Cold-cure, 100% solids systems remove the hot work permit from the scope and reduce the ventilation load, which compresses the outage window without adding risk.
